Picking Paint Properly - Guide to repainting your home

We have all been there. We walk into our local Lowes or Home Depot and we stare at the paint swatches. Decision made, “Fun in the sun” Yellow, great choice! Now what? It is time to head to the wall of paint to pick your finish. What does it all mean?

Types of finish and where to use them in your home.

FLAT FINISH:

This finish has the lowest level of sheen. This is best used for low traffic areas such as ceilings and master bedrooms. This paint also is good for walls that may have a few imperfections. The lack of sheen, light reflected, will help mask any surface imperfections.

EGGSHELL FINISH:

Light amount of sheen. This type of paint works best used in rooms that are moderately used. Such as, guest bedrooms living rooms, or family rooms. Do not use this paint for trim or windows. This paint is washable and will not ruin the surface.

SATIN FINISH:

This is your middle of the road when it comes to sheen. This is a fairly durable paint that is also washable. If you want durability without all the shine this is the paint for you. This works best in high traffic areas of your home such as kids bedrooms, entryways, laundry rooms, and kitchens. This is one of the most practical choices to have in your home because it can be used throughout your home.

This is a moderately high sheen. Semi-gloss paint is used most frequently in high traffic areas or high moisture areas such as; kids bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and entryway. This is a family friendly paint as it is easy to clean and durable.
